Fairfield Harbour hosted about 200 people at their day of remembrance on Veterans Day, including N.C. Rep. Norm Sanderson.

About 58 Marines who weren’t able to travel home for the holiday found a family with whom to celebrate the day. See more on WNCT.

CAS Manages Community of the Year

Fairfield Harbour has announced that the community was recently named Community of the Year by the Community Association Institute’s North Carolina Chapter (CAI-NC). The award recognition took place at CAI-NC’s annual conference. CAI-NC’s Community of the Year award recognizes communities of excellence across North Carolina as well as the efforts made by its board members, community members and residents. In addition, the Community of the Year award evaluates the overall role of community management companies, which are heavily involved in the guidance and direction of community associations. Additionally, Mystre’ Van Horn, the community manager of Fairfield Harbour, was named a Manager of Distinction. CAS serves as the professional management company for Fairfield Harbour.

CAS Manages Seven Lakes Landowners

We are pleased to announce that CAS, Inc. began managing Seven Lakes Landowners on the first of this month. Seven Lakes is a premier residential community nestled among the stately pines and rolling terrain of North Carolina’s Sandhills region. Initially conceived in the mid-1970s as a summer home and resort area, prospective buyers quickly recognized its appeal as a year-round residence. This 1,400 lot gated community is a well-balanced mix of working parents and active retirees. We are excited to serve its residents as well as work with their staff: Ray Sohl (manager), Stephanie Cook (office manager), Bianca Pratt (receptionist), Alice McPheeters (office) and Brenda Massimo (office).

CAS Sponsors Tennis Tournament to Benefit Special Olympics

The local tennis community of Moore County helped raise over $2,500 for the local Special Olympics program through the Serving Aces Tennis Tournament. The tournament was organized and hosted by Julie Criscoe; Club Manager/Director of Tennis at Legacy Lakes Racquet & Fitness Club and main sponsors CAS and Forest City Land Development. During the weekend of August over 60 players took part in the doubles and mixed doubles tournament.

According to Special Olympics Moore County Tennis Coach Scott Boucher, “fundraisers like this are needed to allow our program to be able to offer sports year round to athletes in Moore County. Being that we are 100% privately funded we rely on events like this to pay for not only the tennis program but also other sports like bowling and athletics. I thought it was a great idea when Julie first presented the idea to me. Legacy Lakes has been the host club for our program from the first day they opened. I could not ask for a better partnership than the one I have with Julie and Legacy Lakes.” Click here to read more in The Pilot.

Fairfield Harbour Raises Food and Funds to Help Homeless

Fairfield Harbour Property Owners Association, managed by CAS, collected over 1,000 pounds of canned and non-perishable food to help feed those in need. Additionally, through partnership with the Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department and local businesses, $1,980.32 was raised for RCS, an organization in New Bern, NC that provides a homeless shelter, soup kitchen and other services for those less fortunate.

2012 Manager Appreciation Day

Manager Appreciation Day at Brier Creek Country ClubCAS joined PPM, Omega, and Charleston at the Brier Creek Country Club for the 2012 Manager Appreciation Day. The event celebrated and honored the work of our community managers while raising money for charity. Managers had an opportunity to network, meet with vendors and enjoy themselves.

The event raised $8,000 for the non-profit Extraordinary Ventures, which provides employment and social opportunities to young adults with autism and other developmental disabilities.

CAS Honored at Community Associations Intitute North Carolina Annual Conference

CAS attended the Community Associations Intitute North Carolina Chapter’s annual conference in Raleigh. For the third year in a row a CAS manager won the Onsite Manager of the Year Award. Congratulations to Judy Marshall at St. James Plantation! Prior winners include Mike Zmuda at Hedingham in 2010 and Dennis McGarvey at Governors Club in 2009.

Governing by Representation

Governing bodies enlist the help of elected officials to act on behalf of all of those who have elected them. Community associations are a part of a much broader tradition of using elections to choose those who will represent a group of people. Everything from the federal government down to state, county and city governments use this same democratic process to choose officials for representation.

The board of a community association is put in place to save time when making decisions. Some argue that it is necessary to get the entire community involved in every vote. If the community is needed for every vote to pass, there is really no purpose of having a board in the first place. Board meetings are designed to allow concerned residents to bring up valid points regarding certain decisions, but this is only designed to sway the opinion of those who have been elected. Residents should consider joining a committee as a good way to make sure that opinions will be heard easier and with a clearer message.

Whenever it is time to vote in new members to the community board, residents should consider the candidates carefully. Any residents within the community with an opinion or an idea of how the community should be shaped for the future should consider running for a spot on the board.

CAS hosted a Lunch & Learn at the Pinehurst Resort for CAS Large Scale Management clients consisting of associations with on-site management staff. In attendance were representatives from St. James Plantation, Governors Club, Seven Lakes West, Hedingham, Fairfield Harbour, Oyster Harbour, and Seven Lakes Landowners Association.
